How to identify real leather
No single “quick trick” proves that leather is genuine or high quality. A reliable assessment combines surface, edge, reverse side, smell, flexibility, construction and clear product information.
01The practical difference
Natural leather often shows controlled variation rather than a perfectly repeated grain. Coated, corrected or embossed leather may look uniform and can still be genuine, so appearance must be interpreted with the product description.
02What to inspect in store
Inspect grain at several points, unfinished edges when visible, stitching holes, flexibility, recovery and the way panels are selected. Avoid damaging tests such as burning, scratching or applying water.
03Which option may suit you
Judge the complete jacket: leather type, usable hide selection, lining, hardware, seams and fit. Ask directly what the material is and how it should be cleaned and stored.
